Wight Family Scholarship

Scholarship Amount:

  • Two $1,500 scholarships are awarded annually to Marina High School seniors who will be attending an accredited two-year or four-year university.

Due Date:

  • Friday, April 26, 2024.

Background:

The Wight Family Scholarship honors Commander Randy Wight, USN (Ret.) and Linda Wight and their values of education and community service. Linda worked in the field of university-level human resources for over 30 years. Randy and his Canine Companions for Independence Service dog, NIOSH (called Neo for short), tutored and supported Marina High School students.

The Wight Family Scholarship is privately funded. 

Eligibility & Application Requirements:

  1. Student must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA).
  2. Student must be a graduating senior, attending Marina High School (MaHS).
  3. A completed application.
  4. An official copy of the student’s transcripts showing the GPA.
  5. At least one letter of recommendation from a MaHS faculty or staff member.
  6. A one-page response to the question: “What challenges have you faced in pursuing your education? How did you or how do you overcome those challenges?”

About Randy and Linda Wight


Commander Randy Wight, USN (Ret.)  and Linda Wight have lived in Marina for more than 25 years after moving to the Monterey Peninsula in 1988. 

Education has always been a priority and value for both Randy and Linda. Randy was a career naval officer who retired in 1995. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy and earned two master’s degrees, one from the Naval Postgraduate School and one from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Linda graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Towson University in Baltimore, MD and earned a master’s degree from Chapman College in Orange, CA. 

Randy and his Canine Companions Service Dog, NIOSH (Neo, for short!), volunteered at Marina High School prior to 2020 where Randy tutored and supported students in the AVID program. Linda worked in the field of higher education Human Resources for 30 years. She joined the California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) Office of Planning and Development in 1994 in Seaside and retired as CSUMB’s Associate Vice President of Human Resources in 2011. 

Randy and Linda have served on both local and regional boards. They are members of the Northwest Regional Board of Canine Companions. Their goal is to ensure Monterey County residents know that Canine Companions certified assistance dogs are provided to disabled adults, children, and veterans, free of charge. Linda proudly serves on The Marina Foundation Board.
